Personal Information:

Cyrus Logee's birth was recorded in Glocester, Rhode Island as 12 Oct 1778, the son of Caleb and Rachel Loge1. Nineteen years later, on 5 Dec 1797 he was married to Hannah Fairfield in Glocester by Elder William Bowen2. That same record listed the birth of his two sons, Duty and Stephen Logee. Cyrus and Hannah did have a daughter, Lucretia, but her birth does not appear to have been entered into the town records3. Hannah Fairfield may have been the daughter of Abraham and Sarah (Cook) Fairfield4.

On 2 Jan 1802 his father, Caleb Logee, executed a deed transferring 88 acres of land to Cyrus for $5005. This property was partially described as "Land I [Caleb] bought from John Stone." Though the deed was recorded in Glocester, the property for this and other Logee land transactions were located in the area that would become Burrillville. Cyrus soon purchased two small parcels in the "North part of Glocester" from Augustus and Irah Wilcox respectively, which supports the conclusion that his farm was in the current Burrillville area6.

On 17 Feb 1804 Cyrus and Hannah's last child, Stephen Logee, was born. This was the last record for Cyrus' family recorded in Glocester. Shortly after the formation of Burrillville, Cyrus was elected several times to public office. On 2 June 1810 he was elected as one of the overseers of the poor at the Burrillville Town Meeting. At other Town Meetings, he was elected as one of the Surveyors of Highways in the years 1809, 1814, 1828, 1829, 1834, 1835, 1836, and 18377. Cyrus was also involved in several small land transactions between 1817 and 18428.

Cyrus apparently had a connection with Tertillies Tucker9. As executor of Mr. Tucker's estate, he sold 11 acres and 100 perches of land to Elisha Sayles Jr. for $102 on 21 Mar 1814. This document was witnessed by Caleb and Dorphin Logee. Cyrus was eventually buried in a small family burial plot that includes the tombstone of Tertilles Tucker. However, I have found no family connection.

Per the book, Wallum Pond Estates, the area called Wallum Pond was in the northwest corner of Burrillville, about 1 1/2 miles east of Connecticut10. It was partly in Douglas and partly in Burrillville. Both Cyrus and Duty Logee had homes in this area. Cyrus Logee was the first to be granted a teaching certificate for the small school built in this area.

In 1827 his daughter, Lucretia (Logee) Paine, died, followed five years later by the death of her husband, Junia11. She had been married just over one year and left no offspring. During this period Cyrus had also been serving as guardian for his nephew Leonard Logee, son of Darling Logee. On 26 Mar 1829, a document was recorded in Burrillville indicating that Leonard Logee had received his full inventory and money from Cyrus Logee, as guardian12.

Cyrus Logee's family did appear consistently in the federal census records over these years. In both the 1800 and 1810 his family only listed one adult female age 16-26. This would place Hannah's birth year at or near 1784. In 1830, no female was listed in his household of appropriate age for Hannah. Therefore, it is probable that she died between 1820 and 183013.

Two successive documents recorded in 1840 began moving some assets to his sons. On 7 Apr 1840 a Note was recorded indicating the settlement of a court case resulting in Stephen Logee receiving $800 from Cyrus Logee14. No other detail was given in this record. This was followed on 27 May 1840 where Cyrus sold 112 acres to Duty Logee for $300, partially described as "a Certain Farm lying in the North Westerly part of Burrillville formerly owned by Caleb Logee" and later on 21 May 1842 Duty received additional land for $2515.

The last record prior to his death was the 1850 census16. Oddly, Cyrus was listed twice in that census year. He was listed in the household of his son, Duty Logee, in Burrillville. He was also listed in Smithfield, Rhode Island in the household of Anna Paine age 70. He occupation was still farmer.

Cyrus Logee died 1 Mar 1853 in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. He was buried in the Logee Cemetery on Rock Ave at telephone pole 19 in Burrillville17. The Rhode Island Historical Society record incorrectly lists his death date as Mar 1843. In the same cemetery a stone was transcribed for Hannah Logee with no dates. This is probably the tombstone of Cyrus' wife, Hannah (Fairfield) Logee.
