Personal Information:

Joseph Holbrook Logee was born 17 Oct 1804 in Douglas, Massachusetts1. He was the son of Daniel and Mary (Holbrook) Logee. On 31 Aug 1826 a marriage intention was recorded in Douglas for Joseph Logee and Prudence Paine of Burrillville2.

Prudence was born about 1805, probably in Burrillville, Rhode Island3. As a result, she was probably a close relative of the Reverend Moab Paine of Burrillville.

Joseph and Prudence (Paine) Logee recorded the births and some deaths of their children in Douglas, Massachusetts4. Joseph was sometimes referred to as Capt. in the Douglas records. However, no military or militia records have been found.

In 1850 Joseph and his family were residing in Blackstone, Worcester Co., Mass.5 Two of their children, presumably his son and daughter, were residing in their household. The children listed were Mary J. age 17 and Henry F. age 13 (Henry added to this Joseph Logee family group based on this census record). Both were listed as born in Mass. Joseph listed his occupation as carpenter.

On 3 Feb 1858 Prudence (Paine) Logee died in Douglas6. She was buried in South Street Cemetery beside her children. Joseph must have moved to Ohio immediately following his wife's death or perhaps even before she died. On 4 Mar 1858 he married Maria Sales in Guernsey Co., Ohio7. In 1860 Joseph and Maria were residing in Guernsey County8.

In that year Maria Logee received land in Olive twp., Noble County, Ohio from George Baker9. The relationship between George Baker and Maria has not been proven.  However, it would be unusual for a separate land transaction to another man's wife unless their was a family connection or a settlement of an estate (see special note below). In 1862 Maria received a second tract of land in Noble County from Samuel Caldwell10. Joseph and Maria remained in Noble County throughout most, if not all, of the rest of their lives. Joseph was involved in two more land transactions in Noble Co. through the period to 188111;12. In 1880 Joseph and Maria were still residing in Noble County, Ohio13.

On 28 Oct 1886, Maria Logee, unmarried, sold the last parcel of land in her possession14. This would indicate that Joseph had died prior to that date. Though the exact date of his death is not known, Norval C. Logee indicated in a family history that Joseph was buried in the family cemetery in Millwood twp, Guernsey County, Ohio by his father Daniel and grandfather Daniel Sr. Logee. The tombstones of Joseph and Maria have not been found to confirm this family tradition.

Wayne County is close to Guernsey County and coincidence of a George Baker (same name as sold property to Maria Logee) could indicate a connection. Further research is required.
