Personal Information:

Dorphin Logee was born 26 Feb 1783 in Glocester, Providence County, Rhode Island1. He was the son of Caleb Logee and Rachel Battles. His birth record was entered as Dauphin Loge, child of Caleb and Rachel Loge.

On 27 Feb 1806 Caleb Logee, his father, sold Dorphin Logee 50 acres of land in the Northern part of Glocester which later became Burrillville2. The boundary description mentioned the Mowry line and the lands of Noah Millard and John Robbins. On 1 Nov 1806 Dorphin married Elizabeth Aldrich in Douglas, Massachusetts3. Elizabeth was the daughter of Edward and Ruth Aldrich4. She was born 28 Feb 1785 in Mendon, Massachusetts.

Dorphin Logee's name first appeared as a head of household in the 1807 Burrillville tax roll5. Though the Logee families were well established in Burrillville, none of the births of Dorphin and Elizabeth's children appear to have been recorded. Therefore, other records were used to establish the family group. As an example, their son, Willis Logee, has a memorial tombstone in Pascoag Cemetery confirming his link to this family group6A (See special notes below for a child incorrectly identified as a daughter of Dorphin Logee). The 1810 Census, listed Dolphin Logee and his wife with only 1 male child under the age of 107.

Dorphin's brother, Darling Logee, died in 1816. on 3 May 1817 Dorphin was appointed as the guardian of two of Darling's children, Olney and Sally Logee8. Just two years later, when his next son was born, he named him J. Darling Logee in honor of his deceased brother. In 1819 he served as administrator of the Jacob Jenne estate9.  On 2 Jan 1819, Caleb Logee gave "to son, Dorphin Logee, for Natural love and affection" some of his property in Burrillville10. The transaction was witnessed by Caleb Logee Jr. and Olney Logee. The 1820 Census listed Dauphen Logee's family with 2 male children and 1 female child11.

In 1830 Census, Dorphin's family was listed with 3 males and 3 females12. This leaves the possibility that one daughter has not been identified in this family group. However, based on the records found to date,  it seems unlikely that, if there is another daughter, she survived to adulthood. On 7 Jun 1830 The Burrillville Town meeting elected Dorphin Logee (Jr?). to Town Council13. That election confirmed Dorphin's place as a prominent citizen of the Burrillville Community. On 2 May 1831, Dorphin purchased some property from his brother Burrill Logee for $40014.

In 1838 Linus Logee, Dorphin's oldest son, died. Dorphin was appointed as the administrator of the estate15. On 18 Nov 1841, Linus' wife Hannah received $1,808.36 for "widow and heirs.16" The document was witnessed by Laura A. Logee (the wife of J. Darling Logee), whose maiden name, like Hannah's, was Sherman. Dorphin and Elizabeth soon lost their youngest son Willis Logee. Willis was only 21 years old and there is no evidence that he married or had children. His tombstone is located in Pascoag Cemetery. The inscription on the stone had "In Memory Of" above the name. This may indicate that he is not actually buried in this cemetery. His grandfather Caleb Logee has a similar stone in the same cemetery but has another stone in the family burial plot of Caleb's farm. It was in August, just before Linus' death that Dorphin transferred some land to Darling Logee17. This may have been in anticipation of Linus' death as deeds from Linus and this deed to Darling were recorded at the same time. In that land transaction, Dorphin Logee gave land to Darling Logee for "Paternal affection that I have and Do bare towards my son Darling Logee of Burrillville Labourer." It appears to be the only document that directly states Darling Logee was Dorphin's son.

Dorphin was involved in several more land transactions throughout his life18. On 5 Jun 1848 Dorphin continued his prominent role in the community when he leased part of his property to the School District of Burrillville #819. This part of the District would be later be called the Logee School District.

On 14 Feb 1848 Dorphin Logee executed his will20. He bequeathed his entire estate to his wife Elizabeth Logee and after her death to be divided "between my heirs according to law." Dorphin died 14 Jan 185321. According to a Burrillville Journal his death was due to an accident while riding his horse22. Dorphin's will was proved on 19 Feb 1853. His estate was valued at $721.77. The appraisers were Duty Logee, Charles Albie and Ochey Jenne. The inventory included notes from Duty Logee, Darling Logee and Samuel W. Millard.

Following Dorphin's death, Elizabeth (Aldrich) Logee moved into her daughter's household. In 1860 and 1870 she was residing with Arena (Logee) Taft and her family23;24. Both census records indicated that Elizabeth owned real estate. On 8 Nov 1873 Elizabeth died in Burrillville at age 88y 9m 11d28. the cause of death was listed as "old age."

Elizabeth was buried in Pascoag Cemetery next to her husband, Dorphin and her son Willis. Later the family of her daughter, Arena (Logee) Taft, was also buried at Pascoag Cemetery in Burrillville25.

Special Notes:

A record for the New East Thompson Cemetery in Thompson, Conn. listed the death of a Luca daughter of Dauphin Logee who died 15 Feb 1857 age 9 months. The entry was actually for the Lucy Logee, daughter of Dorphin's son, J. Darling Logee, as the death date matches that on Lucy's tombstone.
