Personal Information:

Linus Logee was born about 18061. He was the son of Dorphin Logee and Elizabeth Aldrich. The first record for Linus Logee appears in Burrillville. At the Burrillville Town Meeting on 16 Apr 1828 "Linas Logee" was "Voted Free.2" This vote would indicate he was an adult and probably owned land allowing him to be a voting member of the community. On 20 Jan 1831 Linus married Hannah Sherman in Burrillville3. Hannah was the daughter of Zadoc and Rebecca Sherman4

In his short life, Linus served the Town of Burrillville in at least three elected positions5. In 1831 and 1833 he was elected as one of the Surveyors of Highways. In 1833 he was also elected to the post of Constable. In 1837 he was elected to his final position as a member of both the Town Council and School Committee.

Though it is probable that Linus Logee owned land prior to being "Voted Free" in 1828, no earlier land transaction was found. On 5 Dec 1833 he purchased 40 acres of land from Benjamine Greene for $27.376. Five years later on 9 Aug 1838 he and wife Hannah sold William Taft of Uxbridge (his brother-in-law) 52 acres for $9007. The land was partially described as "the land that Martin Taft had owned."

On 25 Sep 1838 Linus Logee died. His cause of death is not known but he was about 32 years old. He was buried in the New East Thompson Cemetery, Thompson, Windham County, Connecticut. His tombstone was inscribed "Mr. Linus Logee son of Mr. Dorphin Logee Of Burrillville RI who died Sept 25, 1838 in his 32d year." Both Thompson, Conn. and Burrillville, R.I. have portions of the probate records for Linus Logee8:9. His father, Dorphin, was appointed administrator of his estate in Thompson. The inventory, settlement of debts and final distribution were recorded in Burrillville. the value of the estate was set at $4624.58. The final distribution to Hannah, as the widow with his heirs was $1808.36.

In 1850 Hannah's mother died. The 1850 Census in Burrillville listed Hannah Logee, her three children, her father Zadoc Sherman and a William Lerois, shoemaker as sharing the same household10. Zadoc was still residing with Hannah in 1860 and 187011;12. The 1860 Census is the only instance where Hannah was listed with a surname other than Logee. In that record the surname was Davis or possibly Mavis. On 25 Sep 1870 her father, Zadoc Sherman, died. Following the death of Zadoc, Hannah resided with her daughter, Jane Whiting. In both the 1875 State Census and the 1880 Federal Census, Hannah was listed in the Whiting household13;14. It should also be noted that census records consistently indicated Hannah owned land as well as personal property. Hannah passed away on 5 May 189015;16. The cause of death was given as LaGrippe, a term commonly used for influenza. She was buried in the New East Thompson Cemetery. The cemetery was also the resting place for her parents and later some of her children and grandchildren. Hannah's tombstone was inscribed "Hannah wife of Linus Logee Born July 8, 1811 Died May 5 1890.

Hannah Logee's will was recorded in Burrillville on 28 Jun 189017. She had executed her will on 16 Apr 1890, just two months before her death. The witnesses to her will were Dennis Hilton (her grand nephew) and Alvah Mowry. She left bequests to her children and grandchildren. The bequests were as follows: Jane E. Whiting all household furniture and wearing apparel; Susan L. Freeman d/o Albert Logee $25; Linus Logee son of Albert Logee $25; Laura A Burrill daughter of Albert Logee $25; Francis A. Logee son of Albert Logee $25; Theresa I. Fisher daughter of Almon Logee $25; Orrin J. Whiting son of Jane Whiting $25; Horace A. Whiting son of Jane Whiting $25; Mary Etta Whiting daughter of Jane Whiting $300; to son Albert Logee and daughter Jane E. Whiting all the rest and residue of estate. The executor was Jane E. Whiting.
